History about Gresham Hotel London and its surroundings

The Gresham Hotel is located in the beautiful Bloomsburry area that is located in the centre of London .

The earliest records of the Bloomsbury area go all the way back to 1086 this makes it the one of the oldest areas in London. But it wasent named Bloomsbury until the year 1201.

The name has its origin in the word Blemondisberi - the bury, or manor, of Blemond.

In the 14the century Edward III bought Blemond’s manor, and gave it to Monks from the London Charterhouse whom kept it rural.

After The Dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century King Henry VIII stole the land from the monks and grated it to Thomas Wriothesley, 1st Earl of Southampton.

In the fist years of the 1660s the Earl of Southampton build what later on became the Bloomsbury Square. The area was designed and build mainly in the 18th century mostly by landowners.

Most of the develpoment of the squares that is still there to see today was stared in about 1800 when Francis Russell, 5th Duke of Bedford disposed of the Bedford House and build the land to the north with Russell Square as the centre.

The Bloomsbury area in London is known for its greenery and it boasts several gardens and statues, some dating back several hundred years. It is a perfect place to be, especially in the summer. When the sun gets too hot, travellers can head to various squares including Bloomsbury, Russell, Tavistock and Gordon, where refreshments from the heat can be had for a free or a decent.
Bloomsbury is also known as the origins of The Bloomsbury Group and its famous members Virginia Woolf and E. M. Forster. A group of artists and writers who were politically vocal, sexually uninhibited and Bohemian way before it was cool. Bloomsbury today is therefore culturally alive as it was many years ago. Although tourists are plentiful, the area is popular with students and wealthy residents.

The famous British Museum is also located nearby. Established in 1753, it now boats awe-inspiring design and artefacts dating back many centuries. Don't forget to visit this London wonder- head straight from your hostel along Great Russell Street, it is only a few minutes walk!
